Willow Warbler in an Edinburgh garden.

June 27, 2022 by gav No Comments

Photo of a Willow warbler on Berberis.
Willow Warbler

During the COVID Lockdowns we started to get more and more uncommon birds to the garden as traffic on the roads was less frequent. Although I am only 50% sure this is a Willow Warbler, the lighter coloured legs and the more distinct eye stripe are a good start for identifying a Willow Warbler instead of a Chiffchaff but they are not exact. The Ciffchaff is far more common in the garden as can be seen by the sightings of Chiffchaffs listed on my Chiffchaff – What Birds I Spotted Today year lists. The only way I know how to visually tell the difference is that the Chiffchaff has emargination on the sixth primary feather. There’s a small photo mine on 2018 Edinburgh, Scotland Garden Bird List. I will try to dig out the bigger version and add it here in the future to help others identifying the difference between a Willow Warbler and a Chiffchaff.

The great to add it to my what bird has spotted today garden list. www.wbist.com.

Fox enjoying the warmth of a compost heap.

June 22, 2022 by gav No Comments
Fox enjoying the warmth of a compost heap looking over its shoulder at a fox coming in from the background.

This fox photo was from 2017 when there was a compost heap breaking down on top of the lawn. I will upload a photo from my phone tomorrow of how the garden looked a year later.
I didn’t share this exact photo last year (taken 25th of August 2017) but thought it was quite cute of the fox getting woken up by another fox showing up behind.
The compost heap is now all broken down and is a garden bed has the Echinaceas, foxgloves, sunflowers, Dianthus Rockin’ Red, Nasturtiums and more. not sure the fox is happy about that and keeps digging up the plants.

Fox amongst the crocuses.

June 15, 2022 by gav No Comments

Day 11 of #FoxOfTheDay. This fox photo was from back in February and is one of the areas of lawn that doesn’t get mown from October until start of June to allow the flowers to bloom. From June onwards it gets one cut a month as the grass currently outcompetes the clover, daisies and buttercups. I have been adding more clover, daisies and buttercups from around the garden to hopefully spread amongst the lawn and then it will be cut less often.

The previous owner of the house was obsessed with the lawn and didn’t allow any clover, daisies or buttercups in the lawn. When moving in to the new house we planted 3 daisies from the previous house we lived in and they are slowly spreading out. I also scatter clover seeds and have moved a fair few creeping buttercups to the lawn in the hope of attracting more wildlife. I’ve also added about 500 crocus bulbs into the lawn which the bees love in late February and early March when there’s very little available. More will be added, as well as letting the crocuses seed and hopefully continue to multiply. No Mow May: https://nomowmay.plantlife.org.uk/ is a fantastic campaign. Having long grass also gives the crocuses a chance to seed and feed the bulbs by leaving the grass uncut for months after they flower.

This is the area talked about in this post: Fox stealing a glove in front of a foxglove flower!
